Brownsburg has a rich motorsports heritage. With the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park located in Brownsburg, nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and many race teams headquartered in Brownsburg, it is known as the “Drag Racing Capital of the World.”

To honor this heritage, the Town of Brownsburg partnered with the Indiana Racing Memorial Association in 2023 to create the Brownsburg Racing Memorial Trail. This trail honors significant figures in Indiana’s racing history, each commemorated with a marker. Learn about the current markers below.

Larry Rice

Larry Rice, a native of Linden, Indiana, was a distinguished racing driver known for his achievements in USAC and CART Championship Car racing. He was a two-time Indianapolis 500 starter and was honored as the 1978 Indy 500 Co-Rookie of the Year. His contributions to motorsports are commemorated with a marker located at the trailhead for White Lick Creek Greenway.

Robbie Stanley

Born in Brownsburg, Robbie Stanley began his racing career at a young age, competing in quarter-midgets and later in sprint cars. He achieved significant success, including three consecutive USAC titles from 1991 to 1993. Stanley’s legacy is honored with a marker at the entrance to Williams Park.

Howdy Bell

Howdy Bell was a prominent figure in motorsports broadcasting, serving as a reporter on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network for 42 years. His dedication to the sport is commemorated with a marker at Brownsburg Town Hall.

Dick Jordan

Dick Jordan dedicated over 50 years to the United States Auto Club (USAC), beginning his career in media relations and later serving as the club’s vice president. His marker is located at Arbuckle Commons.

Bill Marvel

Bill Marvel made significant contributions to motorsports through his work with USAC and other racing organizations. His legacy is honored with a marker along White Lick Creek Greenway.

The Brownsburg Racing Memorial Trail offers a unique opportunity to connect with Indiana’s rich motorsports history. In 2025, three additional markers will be added to the trail, continuing the recognition of individuals who have made a lasting impact on the motorsports industry. The Indiana Racing Memorial Association selects and fundraises for all memorials.
