Get excited for the 71st annual NHRA US Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race! Join us at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park from August 27 to September 1 for an unforgettable event.Â
Whether you’re a devoted nitro-in-your-veins racing enthusiast, a first-time visitor, or anything in between, here are ten things to know about this year’s NHRA US Nationals.
1. Tickets
Tickets are available online. Prices vary by day and seat location. Every ticket is a Pit Pass, which gives visitors exclusive access to the teams, meet NHRA drivers and get autographs and photos. In addition, children 12 and under receive free admission with a paid adult.

2. Event Schedule
NHRA Drag Racing is an all-day affair. The best advice for first-time attendees is to come early, stay late, and be prepared for anything. The Friday and Saturday evening races tend to be fan favorites, as the flames shooting out of the exhausts become visible.
View the event schedule online for updated times and events. The Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park Facebook page will also post frequent updates.
3. What to Expect
Visitors staying for the entire six days will witness nearly 950 different cars from all categories racing throughout Labor Day weekend. The cars will reach speeds of over 300 miles per hour in under 4 seconds, boasting 11,000 horsepower and 80,000 foot-pounds of torque.
4. Wear Ear Protection
These cars are LOUD! Throughout the weekend, you can hear the roar of the engines all over Hendricks County. Up close and personal, ear protection is crucial at this event. Whether you pack earplugs or full-on ear muffs, ensure every family member brings something.
5. What to Bring
While earplugs are still the most important thing to bring, remember to wear comfortable shoes as well! It can be a long day in the sun, so sunscreen, a hat, and even chapstick are just as vital.
6. Collect Souvenirs and Autographs
In addition to the essentials, an empty bag to fill with souvenirs can be helpful, and bring a Sharpie and/or autograph book if planning to get autographs from drivers.

7. Stay Hydrated and Nourished
Given the high-energy atmosphere and potentially hot weather, staying hydrated is key to fully enjoying the NHRA US Nationals. There are various food vendors offering a wide range of options, from classic festival food to more unique and fun options. Don’t forget to bring a refillable water bottle, as several water refill stations are available.
8. Visit the Pits
Every ticket includes a Pit Pass, allowing spectators to witness some of the most intense action in the first 30 minutes after a car returns to the pits. For the best view of the teams in action, arrive at the pits a little early. If there’s a major engine meltdown on the track and one doesn’t mind missing the rest of the action, they probably won’t have to fight for elbow room. The lack of crowds also provides a good chance to snag some autographs at other pit areas.
9. Beyond Drag Racing
In addition to the action on the track, fans have plenty to see and do in the pit areas and concourses throughout IRP. Enjoy a display of vintage race and street cars, a variety of live shows, special features, and numerous autograph sessions.

10. Visit Local Race Shops
Brownsburg is also home to top racing teams! Check out various race-team headquarters, including Don Schumacher Racing, Vance & Hines, Tony Stewart Racing, John Force Racing, and many more! Most offer open houses during US Nationals weekend, so check their social media for upcoming events.
