Patriot Day Reflection at Brownsburg 9/11 Memorial

This year marks the 25th anniversary of September 11 attacks, a day that forever changed our nation and united communities in grief, resilience, and remembrance. As we observe Patriot Day, the Town of Brownsburg invites residents to reflect at our local place of tribute, the Brownsburg 9/11 Memorial.

Located in Arbuckle Commons, between The Arbuckle Apartments and Elevate Office, the memorial is a reminder of the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the enduring strength of the American spirit. At its center is a 1,500-pound steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center in New York City following its collapse. The beam is positioned as it would have stood in the original structure and is oriented toward New York, creating a direct connection to the events of that day.

In 2009, members of the Brownsburg Fire Territory learned of an opportunity to obtain a steel artifact from the World Trade Center for use in a memorial. After securing a court order from the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, ownership of the artifact was officially transferred. In 2010, four Brownsburg firefighters, Jim Miller, Donnie Ross, Ryan Miller, and Alex Brand, traveled to John F. Kennedy International Airport to retrieve the beam and bring it to Brownsburg.

The memorial was installed in Arbuckle Commons in 2019 and has since served as a place for reflection and remembrance within the community.

The Brownsburg Fire Territory will be present at the memorial on Friday, September 11, beginning at 8 a.m. A wreath featuring 343 roses, one for each firefighter who lost their life, will be displayed.

Residents are encouraged to visit the memorial, reflect on the significance of the day, and honor those who were lost.
