In 2024, the Town of Brownsburg unveiled a memorial dedicated the work of Diana Virgil, whose legacy will forever bloom in the heart of Virgil Park located on 9145 E County Rd. 300 N.
In 1992, Diana first attended a meeting with other trail enthusiasts and saw potential for the abandoned CSX railroad corridor within Hendricks County. With the intentions of improving health and quality of life for Hendricks Country residents, Diana envisioned the railroad as a functioning recreational trail. Her passion for the project inspired groups of people to come together and form what is now the B&O Trail Association Inc.
Diana and Hall Virgil spent more than 20 years converting the abandoned line into the recreational B&O Trail, embodying the spirit of innovation and community service. Through inspired volunteers and donors, the first 1,000 feet of the B&O Trail were paved in Brownsburg in 2009. Together, the couple spent countless hours meeting with local and state officials, writing grant applications, working with residents, and clearing limbs to ensure the upkeep of the B&O Trail. During Diana’s lifetime, she raised over $12 million for the trail in grant funding, purchased 19 miles of railroad corridor, and paved 6+ miles of the B&O Trail.
Since 2009, the trail has blossomed into a recreational hub for thousands of visitors each year. Thanks to the Virgil’s and their tireless efforts, the B&O Trail now connects Hendricks County to downtown Indianapolis stretching over 8 paved miles.
In 2019, just 10 years after the original portion of the B&O Trail was paved, the Town of Brownsburg named its fifth developed park after Diana and Hall Virgil. The nearly 7-acre park was slated to provide an additional trailhead to the B&O Trail in the coming years.
“There is no doubt that without the persistency and tenacity of Diana and Hall Virgil, the Town of Brownsburg would not be home to a portion of the B&O Trail,” said Town Council President Travis Tschaenn. “Her community spirit, love for nature, and belief in collective action should inspire us all. Virgil Park is a testament to Diana’s lasting impact on our town and will continue to inspire future generations.”
Hall Virgil and daughter, Robin Matteson, were able to speak at the memorial unveiling event, thanking all who attended for their support in making this dedication possible. “This celebration is about Diana, not about me” says Hall. “I was just happy I could help her.”
Virgil Park spans over six acres and provides easy access as a trailhead to the B&O. The park itself features natural elements that help to preserve existing wetlands and prairies within the area. With a 0.5-mile trail network with boardwalks, an exercise area, a picnic shelter, small playground, and year round restroom facility, visitors at the park and trail will forever remember the Virgil’s legacy.
