It’s time to pull the curtain back and show what the Town of Brownsburg’s Communication Intern has been up to this summer! I’ve spend the month sharing what my friends in natural resources, youth programming, and events do in their roles leading up to National Intern Day on July 30, so it’s about time I share more about my internship with the Town.
I am Sarah Pawlowski, a recent graduate from Butler University with degrees in Political Science and Strategic Communication. I interned with the Town of Brownsburg last summer and was excited when my boss invited me back for another season!
I am passionate about local government and am grateful to be able to serve the residents of Brownsburg. Here’s what a typical Monday looks like doing so!
My days tend to start off by catching up with the Brownsburg Parks social media channels. A large part of my internship is running the parks’ Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts, which includes responding to any comments and messages we get! Whether it’s a question about event details or a message complimenting our parks, I love hearing the community feedback and getting to share it with our parks team.
After that, I like to spend my mornings uploading, editing, and organizing the photos and videos I took at that weekend’s events. I love getting to attend community events like the Farmers Market, Movies in the Park, Summer Soundtracks, and Pints & Paddles! Getting to meet community members and capture special moments is definitely a highlight of this internship.
The best part of my Monday is filming the weekly Farmers Market promotion video with our Market Master, Madison Laatz, and the Events Intern, Kaitlin Fasbender. We brainstorm creative ideas each week to show off the Farmers Market theme, and after filming I edit the video so it is ready to post the upcoming Wednesday.
After lunch, my supervisor Shelby and I head to the Parks Department for our monthly special events meeting. During this meeting, we discuss upcoming events and the logistics and communication needs that need to be shared with the team.
After we return to Town Hall, I do some website updates. I am in charge of keeping the Brownsburg Parks webpages up to date, and I usually have new updates after our meeting with the Parks Department. Additionally, our fall events were recently finalized, so I am working on building webpages for new events, updating webpages for recurring events, and adding events to the website calendar.
The remainder of my afternoon is spent creating social media graphics for our upcoming events, putting the finishing touches on the weekly Farmers Market e-Newsletter, and working on a blog post for National Farmers Market Week.
I love this internship because it allows me to apply a wide variety of communications skills. From social media strategy to photography to public relations, I stay sharp while contributing to a community that I have come to care so deeply about.
